Vince Welnick & Johnathan Sullivan

The real story about Vince Welnick
San Francisco Chronicle pop music critic and Summer of Love author Joel Selvin has written the definitive story about the death of Vince Welnick, who slit his own throat on June 2. Bob Weir tells Selvin about the troubled former Grateful Dead keyboardist, "I wish I could have helped. I tried, but I failed. The people closest to him wish they tried, but they failed. He tried himself and failed. That's the story and it's a sad one." Read Vince Welnick lived the dream, playing music with the Grateful Dead, but depression dogged him to his final days.

Patriots' Sullivan busted for pot
Former 1st-round draft pick Johnathan Sullivan was arrested in Griffin, GA on June 25 on various charges, including possession of marijuana. Police pulled over his car at 4 am for alleged running 2 stop signs. In addition, he was cited for a noise violation (playing the music in his car too loud) and failure to use a seatbelt. Sullivan and his companion were released on signature bonds.

The 6th overall pick in the 2003 draft, Sullivan, a defensive lineman, was traded to New England by New Orleans on June 5. "I can't really comment on the matter except to say that we're obviously going to rigorously defend Johnathan against these charges," his agent Len Rowe said.

"We're aware of the report and will handle the matter internally," Patriots spokesman Stacey James added. Sullivan's court appeaarance is scheduled for July 20.
