The Benchwarmers hits a home run
The Benchwarmers — the baseball comedy featuring David Spade, Rob Schneider and Jon Heder — scored $20.5 million at the box office this past weekend. It was the biggest opening ever for a baseball movie (topping The Rookie).
Since I've yet to see The Benchwarmers, I can't comment on the film, though boxofficemojo.com says it "mine(s) similar pain-driven underdog laughs as DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story." Sounds like my kind of flick. Plus, it's written by Allen Covert and Nick Swardson, the same team that brought us the stoner comedy Grandma's Boy earlier this year. Adam Sandler's company Happy Madison produced both films.
According to boxofficemojo.com, the top-5 grossing baseball movies since 1982 are:
1. A League of Their Own (1992) $107.5
2. The Rookie (2002) $75.6
3. Field of Dreams (1989) $64.4
4. Rookie of the Year (1993) $53.6
5. Bull Durham (1988) $50.9
