Bonds' 711th

Barry Bonds' 711th career HR against Bill Wagner (he blew his second save) tied the Mets in the 9th. They went on beat the Giants 9-7 in 11 innings, with Chris Woodward knocking in the gamewinner. The Mets totaled 17 hits and Carlos Delgado ripped his 9th HR. Bonds is now 3 HRs away from tying Babe Ruth. "He's one of the most phenomenal hitters I've ever seen in my life and I've seen a lot of great hitters," Mets manager Willie Randolph raved about Bonds. AROUND THE HORN
Ex-Met Mike Piazza hit his 400th HR in the Padres' loss to the D-Backs. He's the 41st player to reach the hallowed mark. "It's good to get it done and turn the page," the catcher told MLB.com. "I'm not looking towards 500 yet... but I think I have a few more in me." To read the full story: CLICK HERE

Comments:
When the Mets brought Willie Randolph on board last year, I thought from the beginning that it was a great move...and nothing's happened since to change my mind. I think this Mets team is ready to step out of the Braves' shadow. (I'm heading out to St. Louis next month to see them play the Cards at the new Busch Stadium.)

As for Bonds, he's begun showing some of his old form over the last few games. Maybe he's poised for a comeback like the one Giambi had last year. That would be a good thing for him, a better thing for baseball.
