Mets win opener
A drizzly, cold afternoon at Shea Stadium didn't stop the Mets from opening-day heroics. To start their 45th season, manager Willie Randolph sent 40-year-old Tom Glavine to the mound. The lefty responded with 6 solid innings, and left with a 3-1 lead. Thanks to several throwing plays in the last 2 innings the Mets held on for a 3-2 victory, upping their major-league leading opening day record to 28-17.
Hitting highlights included a solo homer to right by 3B David Wright, a startling 4-for-4 day by new RF Xavier Nady (picked up from the Padres for Mike Cameron), and two hits and an RBI from new catcher Paul Lo Duca (a free-agent acquisition from the Marlins).
Aaron Heilman was shaky in two innings of middle relief and Billy Wagner notched his first save as a Met (his 285th lifetime). Last year, the Mets lost the opener when Braden Looper blew the game in the 9th. Wagner needed a little help from Carlos Beltran, who nailed Jose Vidro trying to stretch a gap single into a double to end the game. An even bigger play was Jose Reyes' relay from Cliff Floyd that caught Alfonso Soriano at the plate in the 8th.
Glavine won his 276th game. With any luck he'll hit 300 next season.
A sell-out crowd of 54,371 fans braved the inclement weather.
Next game: Wednesday, April 5 vs. the Nationals, 7:10 pm start on SNY. Rookie pitcher Brian Bannister will be making his major-league debut.

What a great feeling to see some nastiness in a closer who is pitching FOR The Mets! That was one fun opening day game-the way last year's should have been. Let's Go Mets '86-'06!
