AROUND THE HORN
* The Yankees are off to a 1-3 start. Their home opener is on Tuesday vs. the Royals.
* Ex-Met Kris Benson lost his first start for the Orioles.
* Barry Bonds didn't play in last night's 14-6 loss to the Braves. In Friday's New York Daily News, T. J. Quinn reported that Bonds "bordered on pitiful" when he struck out in Thursday night's game vs. the Braves. "He flailed, leaving him staggering to catch his balance," Quinn wrote. "Most un-Bondslike." Bonds was intentionally walked twice. "When he was on base, he moved between bases the way most men in over-40 leagues do, like he was trying not to rupture something. In the outfield he had the range of Frankenstein... Bonds look decidedly unhealthy... He looks like he's hurting." Bonds has yet to hit a HR this season. He's stuck on 708 lifetime, 6 shy of Babe Ruth.
By the way, the Giants started the oldest outfield in baseball history on Saturday -- Bonds in left(41), Steve Finley in center (41) and Moises Alou (39 and turning 40 on July 3). And Bonds hardly looked Frankensteinian in the second inning as he faded quickly back to the left-field fence to make a one-handed catch on a drive hit by the Braves' Adam LaRoche. He did break his bat lining out to center in the first inning.
