Wank-ner

The Mets' closer problems continued tonight when Billy Wagner blew his 3rd save of the season. But big bopper Carlos Delgado bailed him out with a 12th-inning walk-off opposite-field HR (his 11th) against the last-place Pirates for a 4-3 win.

Rainy conditions at Shea prompted Willie Randolph to pull Pedro Martinez after 6 innings. With the Mets leading, he was en route to his 6th victory, but Wagner wasn't sharp and allowed 2 runs in the 9th.

Delgado drove in 2, upping his team-leading RBI total to 23. Endy Chavez, filling in for Xavier Nady in RF, went 4 for 5 with an RBI and made a spectacular diving catch in the 12th. Jose Reyes knocked in the other run with his 4th triple. Except for Wagner, the bullpen blanked the Bucs; Duaner Sanchez has yet to give up a run in 18 innings of work.

The Phillies (13-14) beat the Braves (12-15), 5-4, and took over 2nd place; they're 5 games behind the Mets (18-9).

Next game: Thursday, May 4 vs. the Pirates (8-21) at Shea, 7:10 pm start on SNY & WFAN, Tom Glavine (5-0, 2.29) vs. Paul Maholm (1-3, 5.86)

AROUND THE HORN
* The Yankees defeated the Devil Rays, 4-2, in 10 innings. Combined with the Red Sox's 7-6 loss to the Blue Jays (14-12), the Yanks (14-11) moved into a virtual first-place tie with the Bosox (15-12).
* Barry Bonds went 0 for 4 in the Giants' 2-0 victory over the Brewers. He's 2 HRs away from tying Babe Ruth (714) for the second-most HRs in baseball history.

Comments:
This guy doesn't even let us enjoy a win! Forget about cranking the Metallica-just pitch! Who cares if you are throwin' 98 mph if you walk guys left and right? Pedro shut them down with nothing over 85. Well it was such a beautiful night there last night that I'm sure everyone was psyched to go to extra innings.
Nice to have you back Mr. Bloom!
